Administrative Structure




BIT, Mesra is a "Deemed University" under Sec. 3 of the U.G.C. Act 1956. The Board of Governors is responsible for the main functions and overall supervision of activities. It comprises representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the AICTE, The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Shri C.K. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors while the Governor of the state of Jharkhand officiates as the Institute's Chancellor.  There's a Technical Council that decides the academic policy of the Institute.

Candidates must have passed Class 12 / Intermediate or equivalent qualifying examination with 50% (45% for SC/ST) marks in Class 12 / Intermediate or equivalent qualifying examination with English as a subject.

Appearing candidates may also apply, subject to production of marksheet with requisite percentage of marks in Class 12 at the time of Entrance Test and Interview.

Notes:

      Only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after 1st October 1995 in case of General / OBC category and 1st October 1990 in case of SC/ST are eligible for admission. Date of Birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board Class X (High School) certificate only will be considered as authentic.

      Candidates with foreign diplomas should see the EdCIL website for equivalence (www.edcil.co.in), and if required should obtain an equivalence certificate from the evaluation division of the AIU (website www.aiuweb.org).

      In case any Board awards grades instead of marks, the calculation of equivalent marks would be based on the procedure prescribed by the Board.

      At the time of reporting for admission & document verification, selected candidates will be required to produce originals of Pass Certificate of Class 10, Marksheets of Class 10 and Class 12 showing requisite minimum marks, as well as Caste or Special Category certificates in proper format signed by appropriate authority (please see instructions).

      At any level of the studies [Class X or Class XII], a candidate / applicant must have passed all the required subjects at that level from the same Board.

Selection Procedure:

The selection will be based on performance of the candidate in the Entrance Test and Interview conducted by the Institute. However, candidates must meet the age criteria and other minimum academic requirements (see Eligibility Criteria above)

·          Passed Diploma examination (3-year duration) with at least 60% marks (55% for SC / ST / PwD) in respective/equivalent branch of Engineering and Technology. Respective / equivalent branches are given below.

·          Passed B.Sc. Degree from a recognized University as defined by UGC, with at least 60% marks (55% for SC / ST / PwD) and passed 10+2 examination with Mathematics and Physics as a subject with overall first division. Provided that the students belonging to B.Sc. Stream, shall clear the subjects Engineering Graphics/ Engineering Drawing and Engineering Mechanics (or equivalent subject offered by the University) of the First Year Engineering Programme along with the Secondyear subjects.

a) Applicants with B.Sc. Degree will be considered for admission only after applicants with diploma have been considered and subject to the availability of seats.

b) Year of passing Diploma/B.Sc. should be current year or previous year. Appearing candidates may also apply for the program, provided their result is declared by October 2020. In this case, their marks will be considered upto pre-final semester / year.

1)    Candidates must have appeared in one of the following competitive examinations and having valid score / percentile.

      CAT 2019

      XAT 2020

      CMAT 2020

      MAT SEPT – 2019 or MAT DEC-2019 or MAT FEB-2020 or MAT May 2020

2)    Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislatures in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India / AIU. This degree must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling [Class 12 or equivalent] (10+2+3 system).

3)    Candidates must have minimum 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in Honours / aggregate (45% for SC/ST) in graduation. [The percentage of marks obtained by a candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the University / Institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree]

4)    Candidates appearing for final examinations of their Bachelor’s programme in 2020 can also apply, provided they have obtained requisite marks or equivalent (as per item 3 above) based on latest available grades / marks at the time of applying.

5)    Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distancelearning programmes are eligible only if (a) the programmes are recognized by the DEC-IGNOU (b) they have passed the qualifying examination at the time of applying, with minimum requisite marks in average calculated as per item (3) above. They must carry original copy of pass certificate, marksheets of qualifying examination and proof of Institute recognized by the DEC-IGNOU along with their application during the GD &PI. 6)    Candidates appearing for final examinations of their Bachelor’s Program in 2020 can also apply, provided they have obtained requisite marks or equivalent (as per item 4 or 5 above) based on latest available grades / marks at the time of applying, and if selected can join the program provisionally. At the time of reporting for the verification of documents cum admission such an applicant must bring a certificate in original from the Principal of Institute stating that:

7)    Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programs are eligible only if (a) the programs are recognized by the DEC-IGNOU (b) they have passed the qualifying examination at the time of applying, with minimum requisite marks in average calculated as per item (4 or 5) above. They must carry original copy of pass certificate, marksheets of qualifying examination and proof of Institute recognized by the DEC-IGNOU along with their application during admission. [Appearing candidate in distance learning programs, whose results are yet to be declared, are not eligible to apply].

Notes:

1) Candidates with foreign diplomas should see the EdCIL website for equivalence (http://www.edcil.co.in), and if required should obtain an equivalence certificate from the evaluation division of the AIU (website http://www.aiuweb.org).

2) In case any Board / University awards grades instead of marks, the calculation of equivalent marks would be based on the procedure prescribed by the Board / University. Eligibility and Selection Procedure for PhD Full-Time and Part-Time in Birla Institute of Technology, BIT, Mesra

Candidates with following qualification shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme of the Institute:

(a)   Candidates possessing M.Tech./M.E./M.Sc. (Engg.)/M.Arch./M.Pharm./M.Plan./M.Sc./MCA/MBA or equivalent Degree in relevant branch from a recognized University/Institute with minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CGPA on a ten point scale in the qualifying examination are eligible to apply for admission in the relevant departments.

(b)   Candidates possessing B.Tech./B.E/B.Sc.(Engg.)/B.Pharm/B.Arch./B.Plan. or equivalent Degree in relevant branch from a recognized University/Institute with a minimum of 80% marks or 8.0 CGPA on a ten-point scale in the qualifying examination and a valid GATE/GPAT score with a minimum of 80 percentile are eligible to apply for admission in the departments as per their Specialization. (In this case, the candidates need to pass in more numbers of qualifying Pre-PhD papers; the concerned detail is described in Ph.D. Ordinance 2018 -Section 9.1).

(c)   Sponsored candidates must have minimum of two years of professional work experience, besides fulfilling the above criteria. In addition, such candidates should have valid sponsorship at least for three years.

RELAXATION FOR SC/ ST CANDIDATES

Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks for SC / ST candidates.

Note:

1.     NOC from the Institute is mandatory for employees of the Institute which shall be obtained before appearing at the admission test for the Ph.D. programme.

2.     Employees from other organizations shall produce NOC from his/her respective employers at the time of admission.

3.     In case of the candidates with other grade point scale, the decision of the equivalence made by the assigned committee of the Institute shall be final.

FELLOWSHIP AVAILABLE:

A limited number of Institute Research Fellowship (IRF) with a fellowship amount of Rs. 25,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs. 28,000/- per month for the next two years is available depending on the performance. The minimum marks required for IRF may vary across the departments and department wise minimum marks shall be decided by an appropriate committee. These IRFs shall be distributed based on the performance in the admission test, academic career and interview. Ph.D. admission test is mandatory for candidate aspiring for the IRF.

Candidates must have minimum 55% marks in average (50% for SC/ST) in graduation. Candidates should preferably be GATE 2016 / GATE 2017 / GATE 2018 qualified. Non-GATE candidates may also apply. However, their applications will be considered only after applicants who have qualified in GATE have been considered, admitted. 
2.       Candidates appearing for final examinations of their Bachelor’s programme in 2018 can also apply and if selected can join the programme provisionally. At the time of the counselling they must bring a certificate in original from the Principal of Institute stating that: 
a) by 30 June 2018, he/she will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining his/her Bachelor’s degree. 
b) He/she has obtained requisite marks [55% (50% for SC/ST) upto pre-final year / semester] or equivalent based on latest available grades / marks. Provisionally selected candidates will be required to sign an undertaking at the time of admission on Non-Judicial Stamp Paper of Rs. 20/- (as format given in Sec-10). Further, their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the Bachelor's degree / equivalent qualification with at least 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ ST). They must submit proof of passing their final examinations with requisite marks by 31 October 2018. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission. 
3.       Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if (a) the programmes are recognized by the tripartite panel of AICTE-UGC-DEC, (b) they have passed the qualifying examination at the time of applying, with minimum 55% marks in average (50% for SC/ST) calculated as per item (1) above. They must enclose photocopy of pass certificate, marksheets of qualifying examination and proof of the programme recognized by the AICTE-UGC-DEC in letter head of the Institute / College / University with their application form. [Appearing candidate in distance learning programmes, whose results are yet to be declared, are not eligible to apply].

Note: Candidates admitted in M.E. programmes with valid GATE 2016 / GATE 2017 / GATE 2018 score will be considered to receive scholarships only if approved and amount released by the funding agency.

1.      A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute certifying that will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining their Bachelor’s degree.

2.      A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute certifying that they have obtained 55% marks or equivalent (45% in case of SC/ST candidates) based on latest available grades / marks.

F       Candidates must hold a B. Pharm degree from a PCI and AICTE approved Institute. Candidates must have a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation. [Sponsored candidates must have minimum 55% in average (45% for SC/ ST) in graduation]. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects). Candidates should preferably be GATE qualified. Non-GATE candidates may also apply – see Selection Procedures below

F       Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

F       Candidates appearing for final examinations of their Bachelor’s programme in 2009 can also apply, and if selected can join the programme provisionally. At the time of the interviews they must bring:

1.      A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute certifying that by 30 June 2009, they will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining their Bachelor’s degree.

2.      A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute certifying that they have obtained 60% marks or equivalent (45% in case of SC/ST candidates) based on latest available grades / marks.

 

Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the Bachelor's degree / equivalent qualification with at least 60% marks (45% in case of SC/ ST). They must submit proof of passing their final examinations with requisite marks by 31 October 2009. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

 

Note:

F       Candidates with foreign diplomas should see the EdCIL website for equivalence (www.edcil.co.in), and if required should obtain an equivalence certificate well in advance from the evaluation division of the AIU (www.aiuweb.org). 

F       In case any Board / University awards grades instead of marks, the calculation of equivalent marks would be based on the procedure prescribed by the Board / University.  In case a University does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing obtained CGPA with the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the resultant with 100.

 

Selection Procedures:

Admission to the M. Pharm programme will be on the basis of scores obtained in GATE 2008 / GATE 2009, previous academic record and/or written test (wherever applicable) and personal interviews. Candidates who have not appeared or not qualified in GATE 2008 / GATE 2009 may also apply to the M. Pharm programmes where GATE is mentioned as part of the eligibility criteria. However, their applications will be considered only after GATE candidates have been considered and interviewed.  Further, there will be no scholarships for these candidates.
