INTRODUCTION
Austria is located in southern Central Europe. It is a federation of nine
independent states. The population of Austria is 8,032,926, according to the
2001 census, and about 98% of the inhabitants are German-speaking. Austria
joined the European Union on January 1st 1995.

EDUCATION SYSTEM
The Austrian universities traditionally used a two-tier system of degrees—the
Diplom and doctoral studies—and a three-tier degree system is currently being
introduced, with Bachelors, Masters, and doctoral degrees. Twenty-two
universities and about 150 degree programmes at the Universities of Applied
Sciences offer study options in all subjects. Fourteen teacher training
colleges offer graduates from upper secondary schools an education that
qualifies them to teach at compulsory schools of general education.

THE NATIONAL AGENCY
Eurasia-Pacific UNINET is a network that aims at establishing contacts and
scientific partnerships between universities, universities of applied sciences
and other educational facilities in Austria, and partner institutions in
eastern and central Asia and the Pacific region. The goal of Eurasia-Pacific
UNINET is to align and position the Austrian educational system
internationally. In co-ordination with the interests of the Austrian economy
and foreign affairs and the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture,
Eurasia-Pacific UNINET strives to create synergies to support its partners in
various forms of bilateral co-operation.
